Philosophy
We believe that counseling should be accessible to everyone regardless of income. Our perspective is holistic, starting with the premise that the development and integration of mind, body, and spirit are necessary to become healthy, fulfilled and productive.
About the Counselors
The counseling interns who staff this program are master's level students or graduates acquiring experience for professional licensure with the State of Colorado. They are carefully selected based on life experience and personal development to ensure the highest quality for our clients. All of our interns are supervised by Licensed Mental Health Professionals. At this time our intern counselors can only see clients that reside in the state of Colorado.
About the fees
Counseling by People House interns is on a sliding scale of $25-$65 per hour or more, depending on the ability to pay. It is designed for those who make under $65,000/annually, serving individuals, couples, families, and children. We take life circumstances into account when looking at the annual household income.

Meet our Affordable Counseling Interns
Kate Babetski
Affordable Counseling InternHello, my name is Kate (she/her), and I am a clinical mental health counseling student at the College of William & Mary and a counseling intern here at People House.
As a counselor, I take a holistic approach to my work with clients. This means taking into consideration all the different elements that make up who you are today. It is my belief that how you experience yourself, your relationships, and the world around you matters greatly. It is not just your mental health, but your overall well-being that will be at the center of our work.
In our sessions, you can expect to find a receptive, compassionate, non-judgemental space to explore what is most important to you. I work with clients facing any number of challenges, such as anxiety, depression, chronic health issues, life transitions, grief, and trauma. My counseling approach is collaborative and trauma-informed. I blend existential and person-centered approaches with self-compassion, creating space for you to discover the depth and meaning of your life experiences.
I believe every person, including myself, is capable of growth. As a mental health professional, I am committed to lifelong learning and am always seeking new research, approaches, and material to better serve my clients. It is my goal to provide care that affirms LGBTGEQIAP+, disabled, neurodiverse, and multicultural identities.
I look forward to getting to know you and learning where you want to go next.

Matt Bootsma
Affordable Counseling InternThe important events and people of our pasts often shape who we are and who we are becoming. While this truth can hold hope and blessing, many of us seem to have inherited more hurt than hope and more burdens than blessings. Viktor Frankl famously said, “An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior.” There is a reason that you’re feeling this way. There’s a reason that you are looking for help. My goal is to provide a space where we can break those patterns together—to redeem your hurts and burdens and create hope and blessing, not only for your sake but also for those you love.
Hello, my name is Matt! I’m an Affordable Counseling Intern at People House, and I am nearing the end of my Master’s in Counseling at Regis University. I believe in compassionately exploring the past, courageously creating change in the present, and collaboratively paving a fresh path into the future. I primarily practice Gestalt Therapy, including its parts-work, experiential exercises, and somatic principles. I am especially passionate about helping people heal from trauma and its diverse effects.
When I’m not counseling, I love being outside with my dog and wife, eating great food, making good food, and playing outdoor sports.
I would be honored to walk this stretch of your journey with you!

Camryn Clements
Affordable Counseling InternHello, I’m glad you’re here! My name is Camryn, (she/hers), and I am an intern pursuing a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Northern Colorado.
I believe that true healing begins when we bravely honor all aspects of ourselves, even the parts we’ve learned to hide or deem unacceptable. Our identities are rich tapestries woven from the countless contexts that have shaped us—our families, cultures, communities, and unique life experiences. It’s within this intricate web that we come to understand who we truly are.
My work is rooted in the conviction that suffering, and our courageous exploration of our own pain, can become a profound pathway to genuine healing. I am deeply passionate about creating a space that is not only 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming but also actively champions 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, celebrating the full spectrum of identity, sexuality, and expression. I’m also profoundly interested in spirituality, the journey of meaning-making, conscious approaches to substance use and harm reduction, and the intricate dance of attachment that shapes our relationships.
I utilize an eclectic approach, drawing on various therapeutic modalities to create a dynamic environment tailored to your growth. I often incorporate the practical tools of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the transformative exploration of Internal Family Systems (IFS), the empowering re-authoring of Narrative Therapy, and the profound questions of existential themes. Beyond these, I also enjoy integrating insights from Gestalt therapy’s focus on present awareness, Jungian concepts of the unconscious and archetypes, Rogers’s person-centered empathy and Bowen’s understanding of family systems.
You are the catalyst for your own personal growth. My role is to serve as a scaffold—to help point out patterns you might not see, to gently uncover unconscious beliefs and drives that influence your actions, and to provide a safe, consistent space where you can practice new skills and ways of relating to yourself and other human beings. Together, we’ll work to not just alleviate distress, but to foster deep self-compassion and build a life that feels authentic and truly yours.

Morgan Dent
Affordable Counseling InternHi, I’m Morgan, a somatic therapist-in-training and third-year student in Naropa University’s Somatic Body Psychotherapy program. I found my way to this work through my own experience with somatic therapy, inspired by the impact it has had on my life.
I believe that our bodies hold imprints of our past while also supporting our capacity for change. My work is grounded in the understanding that the mind and body are constantly in conversation. From this perspective, strengthening trust in our inner experience helps cultivate self-compassion and insight.
I will approach our work collaboratively, with warmth, respect, and attention to your unique lived experience and goals. Together, we’ll find an approach that feels supportive for you. I hope to offer a grounding, compassionate space where your whole self is welcomed and seen.
I spent the past year facilitating DBT and Process therapy groups at an inpatient psychiatric unit, working primarily on crisis stabilization. Previously, I worked in economic and community development, tech startups, and graphic design. Outside of my clinical work, you can find me on an outdoor adventure with my dog or playing with my cats at home. I also love reading, yoga, TV shows, comedy, card games, and solitude in nature. If there’s anything else you’re curious to know, feel free to ask.

Margaret Grondorf
Affordable Counseling Intern“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable is more manageable.”
-Fred Rogers
Hi, my name is Margaret (she/her) and I am a 2nd-year clinical mental health master’s student from Adams State University. I am excited to be working with People House as a counseling intern and hope to share some of what I find valuable and important in counseling as you are looking for your next therapist. For many people (myself included), the idea of talking about the difficulties, pain, and confusion with others can feel foreign and like a burden. But so much of the healing and change takes place merely by being witnessed by another. This is the philosophy I hold when working with clients, including the idea that most people already have inner wisdom; they just need someone to help them access it. My approach to therapy
is grounded in strengths-based and person-centered, with an existential and post-modernist lens. My favorite part of the therapeutic relationship is getting to co-author our time together, based on your needs and goals for us. If this is your first time in counseling (or your 50th!), my commitment to you is to go at your speed, support and hold space for what is important to you, and bring my most authentic self to our sessions. I’m particularly passionate about supporting peri- and postnatal individuals, LGBTQ+ clients, children and adolescents, and those navigating identity and parenting challenges. I am open to individual, family, and relational clients.

Mitchell Jones
Affordable Counseling InternHello, my name is Mitch. I’m an intern completing my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Regis University. I believe everyone has an innate desire to be cared for, and I’d be honored to support you in that process. For me, growth begins when we discover the motivation for the changes we want in our lives. These motivations often emerge within our relationships, which is why relationship dynamics are an area I attend to closely. I strive to provide a secure, nonjudgmental space where you can explore freely and move toward healing.
My orientation is eclectic, grounded in evidence-based treatments and shaped by my experience in behavioral health services. I’m drawn to working with clients who are hoping to create a new narrative in their lives. I feel comfortable supporting individuals through grief, trauma, and complex relationships that have shaped their development. In our work together, I aim to show up first as a fellow human being and then offer my humble expertise to support our shared therapeutic journey.
Outside of therapy, I enjoy exploring interesting topics, rock climbing, hiking, music, and games.

Nicole Julianne-White
Affordable Counseling InternHi there, and welcome. I’m Nicole (she/her), and I am a relational somatic therapist intern. I’m glad you’ve landed here.
The body holds material, such as emotions, stressors, and trauma, that continually impacts our lives in potentially unknown and implicit ways. Somatic approaches may help you access what your body’s feeling, that your mind may be avoiding, blocking, or unable to fully access. Our work together may tap into movement, imagination, play, or simple body awareness techniques. What we incorporate will be centered around your unique circumstance and needs. Together, we can find new ways to move through the challenges of life, and discover resources and strength from deep within. If you are feeling stuck, lost, or searching for meaning, our work can create the spaciousness needed for new choices to unfold.
My holistic approach — valuing body, mind, and spirit — is a blend of neuroscience, somatic psychology, attachment theory, and mindfulness. My master’s studies in Somatic Body Psychotherapy at Naropa and background both practicing and teaching yoga inform my somatic approach. This often includes working experientially — accessing the power of the present moment. If it’s appropriate, I also enjoy incorporating wisdom from Internal Family Systems psychology.
I have worked with stress and anxiety, PTSD and trauma (including sexual trauma), depression, grief and loss, shame, as well as codependency and relationship challenges. Through this work, I aim to support you in your journey towards self-empowerment and self-acceptance.
Outside of the therapy office, I love to dance, sing, and explore new facets of movement. I treasure my connection with community, the earth, and my two crazy cats.

Max Leutschaft
Affordable Counseling InternGreetings! My name is Max (he/him), and I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling at the University of Colorado Denver. Becoming a therapist has been a dream of mine ever since I attended my very first therapy session, driven by my deep passion for serving and helping others. My roots are in the social work field, with over six years of experience working with at-risk youth and their families, individuals with developmental disabilities, and the elderly.
I believe the therapeutic space is sacred—a place to be shared collaboratively with clients. I see every person as the expert of their own life. Each individual is uniquely themselves, beautiful inside and out, with so much to offer. Most importantly, I believe everyone has the capacity to be their own agent of change. My role as a therapist is to help awaken that inner agent and support long-term growth.
My therapeutic approach is grounded in narrative therapy, solution-focused work, and, above all, collaboration. I am particularly passionate about working with clients experiencing anxiety and social anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, grief, and other life hardships.
Outside of the therapy room, you can usually find me cheering on the Denver Nuggets and Broncos—I rarely miss a game! I also love spending time outdoors, whether I’m camping, walking my dogs at local parks, or going for a run. Humor is a big part of my life; although life can be serious, there’s always space for a good belly laugh. I’m a strong believer in self-improvement and am always looking for ways to grow personally and professionally.
If you feel we might be a good fit, I’d love for you to reach out.
Sincerely,
Max

Tara McHenry
Affordable Counseling InternHi there, and welcome. I’m Tara (she/her), and I’m glad that you’ve landed at People House. Sometimes we come to therapy without fully knowing why—just a sense of being stuck, overwhelmed, or carrying emotions that don’t have names yet. However you arrive, know that how you experience yourself, your relationships, and the world truly matters.
In our work together, we’ll focus not only on your mental health but on your overall well-being. You bring all of you—your joys and sorrows, strengths and challenges just as you are. I bring all of me—deep listening, compassion, curiosity, warmth, grounded intuition, counseling theory, and practical tools. I deeply honor the bravery it takes to seek counseling and the willingness to grow. It would be a privilege to walk alongside you in that process.
My path into this work wasn’t linear. After years in the corporate world, I experienced a profound inner shift through my own healing journey—one shaped by compassionate therapy, transformative experiences, and the slow, courageous work of reclaiming my inner life. That journey became a calling. I am now pursuing my Master’s in Mindfulness-Based Transpersonal Counseling at Naropa University.
During our sessions, you’ll have space to explore what matters most to you, considering all the elements that make up who you are today. Whether you’re navigating life transitions, identity questions, family dynamics, anxiety, depression, grief, or trauma—you don’t have to do it alone. Together, we can uncover patterns, heal emotional roadblocks, and reconnect with your inner wisdom to find meaning, creative solutions, and a deeper sense of well-being. Our work will explore not only what’s painful, but also what’s possible.

Rachel Nevins
Affordable Counseling InternIf you have found yourself here, welcome! My name is Rachel (she/her). I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Counseling (Somatics Concentration) from Naropa University.
As a somatic counselor, I believe the body contains abundant but often neglected wisdom and information that can provide fresh insight and facilitate healing. Through avenues like imagination and sensation, you can begin to learn the language of your body to find new inner resources, transform old wounds, and shift your lived experience of moving through the world. My eclectic and relational approach is rooted in attachment theory, nervous system awareness, and social justice. I believe that you have the precise medicine you need inside of you, and my job is to meet you where you are, and create a supportive and safe enough environment for you to be able to better access that wisdom and unlock your innate capacity to heal.
In addition to being a therapist, I am a Registered Nurse (RN) that works in reproductive health and ketamine-assisted therapy, a birth doula, and a yoga teacher. In my time outside of work and school, I like to read poetry, dance, sing in my chorus, practice yoga, hike, write, draw my feelings, and psychoanalyze reality TV dating shows.
If something in you feels a spark of resonance in what I’ve shared, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Reese Nguyen
Affordable Counseling InternHi, my name is Reese (she/her) and I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at CU Denver. I believe we are deeply relational beings, and that the connection between counselor and client is essential to meaningful work. My approach is grounded in your unique worldview and lived experience. I recognize that problems do not occur in isolation—they happen within personal, cultural, and systemic contexts. My practice considers the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of your life as interconnected and vital to understanding the whole you.
As a second-generation Vietnamese-American, I bring a deep, personal understanding of the complexities and impact of intergenerational trauma, especially in communities where mental health has not traditionally been prioritized or openly discussed. My work is rooted in creating a brave, supportive space for clients to explore their experiences—particularly those navigating identity exploration and the nuances of being bicultural or multicultural. I am especially passionate about supporting individuals who seek a counselor that not only recognizes but actively incorporates cultural context into the therapeutic process. I honor the importance of holding space for clients to process the impact of family dynamics, immigration and refugee narratives, and cultural expectations on their mental and emotional well-being. I strive to support you in navigating these layers while working toward a more authentic and fulfilling way of being, at your own pace and in your own way.
I was born and raised in New Orleans and moved to Denver about three and a half years ago. While I miss the rich food and culture of home, I’ve enjoyed picking up new hobbies like snowboarding, hiking, and camping. I also continue to find joy in well-loved pastimes like cooking and learning about astrology—and sometimes just embracing the art of doing nothing.

Bridget O’Connor
Affordable Counseling InternIf you’re here, something in you is asking for care, and that’s worth listening to. I’m Bridget, and I’m so glad you’ve found your way to People House. I strive to create a space where you can show up just as you are and begin to explore, untangle, and heal. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply needing a place to sort things out, we’ll work together to figure out what’s going on and what might help you move forward.
My approach draws from several evidence-based modalities, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT- to help you connect to your values and take meaningful action), Internal Family Systems (IFS- to explore the different parts of you with compassion and curiosity), and attachment theory (to help you understand how past relationships shape your present ones, and work toward deeper connection with others).
Before entering the counseling field, I worked as a teacher and in a fast-paced corporate environment, experiences that deepened my understanding of the pressures of life, and the quiet struggles many people carry beneath the surface. I’ve had the privilege of supporting clients navigating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and life transitions. I believe everyone deserves a space to be deeply seen and supported, and I’d be honored to hold that space for you.

Allura Renée
Affordable Counseling InternI deeply believe that there is something ever present in human nature that is drawn toward health and wholeness.
Even the reactions, strategies, and patterns of behavior that now cause us trouble, were once brilliant solutions to difficult or even impossible situations.
Instead of efforting for change, I help people accept, allow, and include more of themselves just as they are. As Carl Rogers once said, “When I accept myself as I am, then I can change.”
I facilitate an environment that enables clients to learn to follow and trust their own inner knowing—to uncover, feel, and digest the pain of the past—and open up the possibility for shifts to new ways of living.

Aliza Shapiro
Affordable Counseling InternHi, my name is Aliza (pr. ah-lee-zah) (they/them) and I’m currently completing a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Colorado Denver.
There is so much to manage in our ever-changing world, be they our relationships with ourselves, with others, and with the intersecting systems that directly influence our lives and circumstances. We are who we are today because of these connections. Our past ways of relating to these people, places, and things informs the way we relate now, and offers clues for charting a different path forward.
Every connection we have in life is a story of its own. Sometimes the connection is one we celebrate and other times the connection is simply painful. There are times where all we can feel is the disconnection, the moments where we feel unseen and unheard, scattered in a million little pieces. We can trick ourselves into believing that these stories won’t ever change.
I know you are whole as you are, a perfectly imperfect human being. Coming to therapy can offer support in weaving together the various threads of connection into a story that reminds you of this truth. Let’s rewrite it together.I am open to working with folks from many different backgrounds, with particular emphasis on the genderqueer and lgbtqia+ experience, grief and loss, chronic illness, diasporism, spirituality, relationship challenges, depression, anxiety and burnout. I tend towards a compassionately direct style, and believe in the power of naming our experiences paired with experiential interventions.

Henry Smith
Affordable Counseling InternMy name is Henry Smith (he/him), and I am an intern counselor completing my final year in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Naropa University, with a concentration in Contemplative Psychotherapy and Buddhist Psychology.
I work from a client-centered, Buddhist-informed, post-modern perspective integrating different counseling approaches to best meet clients’ needs. By client-centered, I mean that my work is guided by the clients’ goals, strengths, values, and lived experiences. By Buddhist-informed, I understand that all humans are fundamentally good, although we experience challenges and traumas that can disconnect us from our natural healing capacity. By post-modern, I mean that our environments, the systems of empowerment and oppression that we live within, our relationships, cultures, and the institutions that affect us determine an enormous amount of our experience and provide valuable resources to our own healing. My aim is to work holistically with clients, addressing mind, body, spirit, emotions, and social environments to support growth, resilience, and capacity for connection. My work may draw from cognitive-behavioral, strengths-based, liberation psychology, narrative, dialectical behavioral, internal family systems, somatics, polyvagal, and neurobiological lenses or therapies depending upon clients’ preferences, style, and goals.

Marissa Swartz
Affordable Counseling InternHello! My name is Marissa, and it is an honor to be on this journey. I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Regis University. The road that brought me to this point has been full of ups and downs, unwanted twists and turns, beautifully sunny days and some incredibly dark nights, yet all that has come before has led me to being the best version of myself. My therapeutic approach consists of creating a safe space for clients to share openly about what has led them to therapy. In session, I focus on being person-centered which means I give my clients unconditional, positive regard. I like to bring in existential themes: finding meaning in both the joy and suffering in life. I like to incorporate mindfulness practices such as coming up with a self-affirmation. I also find art therapy to be particularly helpful in bringing the unconscious mind into the conscious mind or uncovering that which is buried deep inside of us. I am a true believer that you have everything you need already inside of you. Sometimes we need help seeing the darker parts, and that is where our work together begins. “…it has finally dawned on me that if I build a home within myself, a palace of peace created with my own awareness and love, this can be the refuge I have always been seeking.” -Yung Pueblo

Affordable Counseling InternHello, my name is Haydin (He/Him), and I am pursuing a degree in clinical mental health counseling from the University of Colorado Denver.
My theoretical orientation centers on the power of stories and how they shape our lives. The narratives we tell ourselves influence how we see the world and our place within it. I also focus on how relationships and culture impact our experiences. In a society that often emphasizes individuality, I believe we can find healing and growth through connection with our communities and through meaningful relationships. By working together to reauthor your story and rediscover a sense of belonging, we can lessen the pain of disconnection and uncover strength and resilience. In our work together, I strive to meet each person with curiosity, respect, and empathy, honoring the courage it takes to seek support and the unique wisdom each client brings to the process.
